"prime the pump" ha.

Yea, there are a ton of problems with this but those aside I thought I raised an interesting question.

Thanks for the comment!

It's interesting; clicking "Enter Sweepstakes" takes you to the same entry form whether you enter the correct answer or leave it blank.

As such, I'd be pretty surprised if it wasn't employing the "foot-in-the-door" technique - getting people to commit to a trivial action in order to increase the likelihood they follow through on a bigger one. (http://faculty.babson.edu/krollag/org_site/soc_psych/freed_fras_foot.html)

It's probable that what's going on here is similar to a Flash game ad, like one of those "can you name this actress?" or 'how many triangles are there?" questions where the barrier to entry is intentionally unchallenging.

They want you to act trivially at first to "prime the pump" of engagement, at which point completing the task they ACTUALLY want you to is more probable than showing that activity from jump street.

The Terms and Conditions make no mention of having to answer correctly. It looks like they're simply exchanging $10k a day for marketing lead contact information. This just seems to be a more entertaining way to get more people to consent to being sold to, is all.

Thanks, Tyesha. I like how you pulled out the 'conceptual thread.' I think other people help us keep our "designs" (and I'm defining it very broadly!) and our process on track, too, the social element of design -- our engagement with our partners, our clients, our sense from close observation of the public for the design. Which is why The Felt Hat approach works so well: they work with people they trust, for clients they trust, and their approach sends them out into the world to find out as much as they can about the landing place for what they are designing. Maybe we don't think of studio practice as social, but...
